Food and drink at Little Fishes

Snack and lunch times are a social time where adults sit with the children, we have good conversations and children learn about healthy eating.

Children have access to water all day and semi-skimmed milk is available at snack time.

Snack time

The children have a snack every morning.  Parents are asked to contribute snacks weekly to be shared, so please provide the equivalent of one portion or more per day your child attends.  These should not contain nuts or large quantities of saturated fat, sugar, salt, artificial additives, preservatives or colourings.  Fresh fruit and vegetables, breadsticks and savoury rice-cakes are good examples of suitable foods.  Please make sure all the snacks come in their original, unopened packaging so we can check for allergens and use-by dates.

Packed lunches

Those staying for lunch (12-12.30) need to bring a packed lunch in a suitable named container.  Packed lunches are not refrigerated but are stored away from direct sunlight and heat sources.  They will be eaten well within four hours of arrival, which meets health and safety requirements provided any perishables were refrigerated before being brought to Little Fishes.

Please aim to provide a nutritious lunch free from large quantities of saturated fat, sugar, salt, artificial additives, preservatives or colourings.  An example of a healthy lunch would be pasta salad or sandwiches with a healthy filling, fruit, and milk-based desserts, such as yoghurt or crème fraîche.  We discourage sweet drinks (including juice or smoothies).  Whilst the occasional treat is fine, we discourage packed lunch contents that consist largely of crisps, processed foods, sweet drinks and sweet products such as cakes or biscuits.

Young children can easily choke on food, so follow the guidance in Early Years Choking Hazards to keep your child safe.
